Ronald's informative, humorous, instructive look at the world of bivouac is certainly the first and perhaps the last in this unexplored terrain. Throughout the book, Ronald shows that from 1900 to 1969 was the Middle Ages from the bivouac, how Diogenes (the Cynic) camped under branches and climbed the Eiger was only through improvised bivouac techniques.

The book concludes with a selection of bivvy bag expeditions to initiate the unwary into the secrets.​
